Warren Tech Welding students Guage Tuma and Nolan MacPherson were recently honored at the American Welding Society Competition banquet on March 20th at the Meadows restaurant in Hellertown, PA. Tuma, a senior and MacPherson, a junior had the opportunity to listen to a wide ranging lecture by the current president of the American Welding Society, Dale Flood. Mr. Flood, who is also welding automation manager for Tri Tool Inc. spoke on the need for welders in the United States to embrace and become involved with welding automation. He discussed welding issues on nuclear submarines, geothermal generation facilities in California, and automated pipe line welding in New Zealand.
Tuma and MacPherson competed with students from six other technical schools from the Lehigh Valley. The competition included schools from Scranton to lower Bucks County. The timed competition required the completion of a written welding test, Oxy-Acetylene cutting, and the fabrication of a pressure vessel.
